Calibrating Your Climate

One of the most common mistakes customers make is buying a jacket for its look without considering the Thermal Rating of the hide. A jacket that is perfect for a cool evening in San Francisco will leave you shivering in a Boston autumn. At IndiFash, we've developed the Hide Thermal Resistance (HTR) scale to help you choose the right material for your local weather.

1. Grade 1: Lambskin & Nappa (HTR: 15%)

These are "Fashion Weights."

  • The Feel: Soft as cloth, draped like a shirt.
  • The Range: 15°C to 22°C (60°F to 72°F).
  • Ideal for: Summer nights, indoor events, and mild climates where the jacket is an accessory, not a survival tool.

2. Grade 2: Top-Grain Cow & Goat (HTR: 45%)

The standard for everyday bikers and urban professionals.

  • The Feel: Substantial and structured.
  • The Range: 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 60°F).
  • Ideal for: Spring and Autumn. These hides are thick enough to block high-velocity wind but won't cause overheating during physical activity.

3. Grade 3: Bison & Heavy Cowhide (HTR: 70%)

These are the heavyweights.

  • The Feel: Broad-shouldered and thick-grained.
  • The Range: -5°C to 10°C (23°F to 50°F).
  • Ideal for: Winter commuters and motorcyclists. The density of the hide acts as a massive windbreak and retains body heat much longer than lighter skins.

4. Grade 4: Genuine Shearling (HTR: 95%)

Nature's ultimate insulator.

  • The Engineering: This is a single skin where the wool is left on the leather. You have a dense forest of protein fibers trapping millions of air pockets.
  • The Range: -20°C to 5°C (-4°F to 41°F).
  • Ideal for: Deep winter, unheated environments, and high-altitude flight.

Thermal Ranking Summary

Hide Type HTR Rating Best Use
Calfskin Low Spring Fashion
Bovine (Cow) Medium Year-Round Utility
B3 Shearling Maximum Extreme Cold

Conclusion

Buying leather is about matching the biology to the environment. Don't expect a Lambksin blazer to do the job of a Bison Biker. Choose your hide based on your climate, and you'll never have to compromise style for comfort.
