What Is Nubuck Leather? (And Is It Good for Jackets?)
The Misunderstood Middle Child
You've likely touched Nubuck without knowing it. The iconic yellow Timberland boot? That is Nubuck. Many high-end "suede" jackets? Actually Nubuck. It is often confused with suede because it has a velvety, sanded texture. But technically, it is the exact opposite.
Suede is created by sanding the inside (flesh side) of the hide.
Nubuck is created by sanding the outside (grain side) of the hide.
This simple difference changes everything about the material's performance.
Strength: The Nubuck Advantage
Because Nubuck preserves the "Full Grain" (the top layer of the skin), it retains all the tensile strength of a motorcycle jacket. Suede, being the inner split, is much thinner and weaker.
Think of it this way:
- Suede is like flannel.
- Nubuck is like canvas.
The "Velvet Armor" Texture
The sanding process buffs the top grain just enough to create a very fine, short nap. It feels like velvet. It is much finer than the "hairy" nap of rustic suede. This gives it a matte, chalky finish that looks incredibly premium. It absorbs light rather than reflecting it.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Durability: It is tough. You can scratch it, and often simply rubbing it with your thumb will fix the mark (the oils in your skin restore the nap).
- Breathability: Sanding the top grain opens up the pores, making Nubuck more breathable than smooth leather.
- Patina: Nubuck develops a wild patina. High-friction areas (elbows, pockets) will eventually smooth out and become shiny, creating a beautiful contrast with the matte areas.
Cons:
- Stains: Like suede, it is porous. Oil and grease are the enemies. Do not eat a burger while wearing a light Nubuck jacket.
- Price: Because you are using the top grain (the most expensive part), Nubuck is significantly more expensive than suede splits.
Maintenance: The Nubuck Block
Cleaning Nubuck is different. You don't use a wet cloth. You use a Nubuck Block (essentially a rubber eraser). If you get a mark, you erase it. Then you use a stiff brush to fluff the nap back up. It is oddly satisfying.
Who Is It For?
Nubuck is for the guy who loves the matte, soft look of suede but is too rough on his clothes to own delicate fabrics. It is reliable luxury.
