Motorcycle Gear: Leather vs Textile — Which Protects Better?
The Slide vs The Impact
This is not about fashion. This is about skin grafts.
If you come off a bike at 60mph, you have two enemies: Impact (hitting the ground) and Abrasion (sliding on the ground).
1. Abrasion (The Slide)
Leather (Cow/Kangaroo): Leather is naturally abrasion-resistant. It does not melt. It grips the asphalt slightly, which helps slow you down and prevents tumbling. You can slide 100 feet in decent leather and walk away.
Textile (Nylon/Polyester): Standard nylon melts instantly from friction heat, fusing into your skin.
Kevlar/Dyneema: High-end textiles can match leather for abrasion, but they are expensive.
2. Impact (The Hit)
Both Leather and Textile jackets use the same armor pads (D3O) in the elbows/shoulders. There is no difference here.
3. Comfort
Textile: Waterproof, vented, lighter. Good for adventure touring (riding around the world).
Leather: Hot, heavy, not waterproof. Good for racing and city riding.
Verdict
Track Day / Highway Speed: Leather. Always Leather.
Commuting / Adventure: High-Quality Textile (Cordura/Kevlar).
