The "Near-Neutral": Why Burgundy Wins

Most men are afraid of color. They buy Black, Brown, and Navy. Then they stop.
But Burgundy (also known as Oxblood, Maroon, Cordovan, or Wine) sits in a unique spot on the color wheel. It is technically a red, but it is so dark and saturated that it functions like a neutral. It adds depth and richness to an outfit without screaming "Look at me!" like bright red or yellow do.

The History of Oxblood

"Oxblood" defined the skinhead and punk subcultures of the 1960s/70s (think Doc Martens). But long before that, it was the color of royalty. It bridges the gap between the rebellious and the refined.

How to Style It: The Best Combinations

1. Burgundy + Grey (The Architect)

The Outfit: Burgundy Racer Jacket + Light Grey Cashmere Sweater + Charcoal Wool Trousers.
Why: Grey is a cool, sterile color. Burgundy is a warm, bloody color. Together, they create a high-contrast sophisticated look that is perfect for creative offices.

2. Burgundy + Navy (The Classic)

The Outfit: Burgundy Bomber + White Oxford Shirt + Navy Chinos.
Why: Dark Red and Dark Blue share the same visual "weight." They are both primary colors shaded down. It feels nautical and collegiate.

3. Burgundy + Black (The Vampire Chic)

The Outfit: Burgundy Double Rider + Black Silk Shirt + Black Skinny Jeans + Chelsea Boots.
Why: It’s moody, gothic, and sexy. It works best at night. In bright sunlight, the contrast might be too harsh, but under streetlights, it kills.

4. Burgundy + Denim (The Weekender)

The Outfit: Burgundy Trucker Jacket + Graphic Tee + Medium Wash Blue Jeans.
Why: The red in the jacket complements the blue in the jeans (opposites on the color wheel). It’s a more interesting version of the "Brown Jacket + Blue Jeans" standard.

What to Avoid

X Green: Unless it's Christmas, avoid pairing bright green with burgundy. Olive drab is okay, but Kelly Green creates a holiday vibe.
X Bright Red: Do not wear a bright red hat or shoes. It will clash with the deep tones of the jacket. Keep other reds far away.

Leather Choice: Cordovan Shine?

Burgundy looks exceptionally good in Horween Chromexcel or other "Pull-Up" leathers. When these leathers crease, the oils move, creating lighter red streaks against the dark background. This dynamic color variation makes the jacket look alive.
