Can You Machine Wash a Leather Jacket? (The Truth)
Just Don't Do It
You will see blogs saying "Wash on gentle cycle!"
Ignore them.
Leather is skin. Would you put your skin in a washing machine with detergent for 40 minutes?
The Risks:
1. Shrinkage: As wet leather dries, the fibers contract violently. You lose size.
2. Dry Rot: Laundry detergent is designed to strip oils (grease/stains). Leather needs oils to survive. Washing strips 100% of the natural lubricants.
3. Warping: The spinning drum twists the heavy wet leather, deforming the shoulders and zipper.
"But I saw a Fashion Guy do it..."
Some people wash leather intentionally to shrink it or create a distressed, ruined, "Rick Owens" aesthetic. If you want your jacket to look like it survived a war and fit 2 sizes smaller, go ahead.
But for maintenance? Never.
The Correct Way to "Wash"
The Lining: This is the part that smells.
1. Turn the jacket inside out.
2. Use a sponge with warm soapy water (Castile soap).
3. Scrub the armpits and back of the lining. Do not soak through to the leather.
The Leather Shell:
1. Wipe with damp cloth.
2. Condition.
Deep Clean:
Take it to a leather specialist. They use C02 cleaning or special solvents, not water.
