The Difference Between Good and Great

Styling is subjective; fit is objective. The most expensive leather jacket in the world will look cheap if it doesn't fit your frame, while a modest jacket that fits perfectly can look bespoke. Unlike knitwear or denim, leather has minimal stretch (initially) and is structurally unforgiving. It won't hide a bad fit; it will highlight it.

Buying online can be daunting, but armed with a tape measure and this guide, you can shop with the confidence of a tailor. Here is your step-by-step masterclass in measuring for a leather jacket.

Tools You Need

  • Soft Measuring Tape: A flexible fabric or plastic tape. Do not use a metal construction tape measure!
  • A Mirror: Full-length is best.
  • A Friend (Optional but Recommended): It’s hard to measure your own back/shoulders accurately.
  • The Right Clothes: Wear a t-shirt or the layer you intend to wear under the jacket. Measuring over a bulky sweater will skew the numbers.

The 6 Critical Measurements

1. Chest / Bust ( The Most Important)

This determines the jacket size (S, M, L, etc.).

How to Measure: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest/bust, under your armpits. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. Relax your arms at your sides.

The Fit Check: Breathe in naturally. The tape should be snug but not cutting into your skin. For leather jackets, you typically want 2-4 inches of "ease" (extra room) depending on the fit style.

2. Shoulder Width (The Dealbreaker)

This is the hardest alteration to fix. If the shoulders are wrong, the jacket is wrong.

How to Measure: Measure across your back from the tip of one shoulder bone to the other. Imagine where the seam of a well-fitting shirt sits.

The Fit Check: The jacket seam should sit exactly on the edge of your shoulder. If it droops down your arm, the jacket looks borrowed. If it sits inward near your neck, you’ll look pinched.

3. Sleeve Length

How to Measure: Place your hand on your hip so your arm is slightly bent. Measure from the shoulder bone (where you ended the previous measurement), down the outside of the arm, over the elbow, to the wrist bone.

The Fit Check: Leather jacket sleeves should hit just past the wrist bone. Why? As you move your arms (driving, reaching), sleeves ride up. You don't want them ending at your forearm.

4. Jacket Length (Back Length)

How to Measure: Measure from the base of your neck (center back) down to where you want the jacket to end.

Style Guide:

  • Biker/Bomber: Should hit at the belt line or waist.
  • Racer/Moto: Often slightly longer, hitting mid-hip.
  • Field Jacket/Coat: Can hit below the hip or mid-thigh.

5. Waist

How to Measure: measure around your natural waistline (usually the narrowest part above the belly button) or where your trousers sit, depending on the jacket length.

The Fit Check: Essential for women’s fitted jackets or men’s slim cuts. Ensure you can zip the jacket without sucking in your stomach.

6. Hips (For Longer Jackets)

How to Measure: Measure around the fullest part of your hips/buttocks.

The Fit Check: Crucial for women's styles or longer men's coats. If the jacket is too tight here, it will bunch up awkwardly when zipped.

Interpreting Size Charts

Every brand is different. A "Medium" in one brand is an "XL" in another. Always ignore the letter size and look at the measurement chart (CM or INCHES).

Garment vs. Body Measurements: Some charts show the measurements of the jacket, others show the measurements of the body it fits.

  • If it's Body Measurements: Pick the size that matches your numbers.
  • If it's Garment Measurements: Pick a size that is 2-4 inches larger than your chest measurement for room to move.

The "Break-In" Factor

Remember, leather stretches. A new leather jacket should feel slightly snug (like a hug), not restrictive. It will loosen up about half a size over the first few months of wear. If it fits loosely when brand new, it will look baggy later.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

"I'm between sizes!" generally, size up if you plan to layer (sweaters/hoodies). Size down if you want a sleek, t-shirt-only look and are willing to endure a break-in period.

"I have long arms!" Look for "Tall" sizing or consider bespoke. Short sleeves ruin the look.

"I have broad shoulders but a small waist." buy to fit the shoulders. A tailor can take in the waist, but they can rarely fix tight shoulders.
