How to Measure Yourself for the Perfect Leather Jacket Fit
Achieving the Perfect Fit
The difference between a good leather jacket and a great one often comes down to fit. Unlike other garments, leather jackets are an investment that should fit perfectly from day one. Here's how to measure yourself accurately for online purchases.
What You'll Need
A soft measuring tape (fabric, not metal), a mirror, and ideally a friend to help. Wear a light shirt or the type of layers you plan to wear under your jacket.
Essential Measurements
1. Chest Measurement
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and don't pull too tight—you should be able to breathe comfortably. Pro tip: For leather jackets, add 1-2 inches to this measurement for comfortable movement.
2. Shoulder Width
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other, across your back. The tape should follow the natural line where a well-fitting shirt seam would sit. This is crucial for leather jackets—incorrect shoulder width is the hardest fit issue to fix.
3. Sleeve Length
With your arm slightly bent, measure from the edge of your shoulder, down your arm, to your wrist bone. Leather jacket sleeves should reach just past your wrist when your arms are at your sides.
4. Jacket Length
Decide where you want your jacket to end. Measure from the base of your neck (where it meets your shoulder) down to that point. Classic lengths end at the hip; cropped styles end at the waist.
5. Waist
Measure around your natural waistline (the narrowest point of your torso). This helps ensure fitted jackets will sit correctly.
Understanding Fit Types
Slim Fit: Close to the body with minimal ease. Best for sleek, modern looks.
Regular Fit: Comfortable room for movement. The most versatile option.
Relaxed Fit: Generous room throughout. Great for layering.
Special Considerations for Leather
Break-In Period: Quality leather will mold to your body over time. A snug (not tight) fit initially is ideal.
Layering: If you'll wear sweaters underneath, account for this in your measurements.
Shrinkage: Genuine leather doesn't shrink significantly, but it can lose some flexibility if it gets wet and dries improperly.
Red Flags of Poor Fit
• Shoulder seams falling off your shoulders
• X-shaped pulling when zipped
• Sleeves covering your hands
• The hem hitting above or well below your hipline
• Restricted arm movement
