How to Get Rid of That New Leather Smell (Or an Old Musty One)
Scent of a Jacket
Leather has a smell. Good leather smells like earth and oak (Veg-Tan). Bad leather smells like chemicals (Chrome Salts). Old leather smells like mildew.
Scenario A: The Chemical Smell (New Jacket)
If your cheap jacket smells like a refinery:
The Cure: Air and Time.
1. Hang it outside in a shaded, breezy area (porch/balcony). do NOT put it in direct sun.
2. Leave it for 3-5 days.
3. The Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) need to off-gas. There is no spray that fixes this.
Scenario B: The Musty Smell (Thrift Store Find)
This is usually mold spores living in the fabric lining or padding.
1. The Vinegar Mist (Mild):
Mix 50/50 White Vinegar and Water. Spray the LINING (not the leather). The acidity kills bacteria. It will smell like salad for an hour, then nothing.
2. The Vodka Spray (Strong):
Cheap vodka in a spray bottle. Spray the lining. Alcohol kills bacteria and evaporates odorless.
3. The Freezer Trick (Passive):
Put the jacket in a sealed Ziploc bag. Freeze for 48 hours. Cold kills *some* (but not all) smell-causing bacteria.
4. The Ozone Chamber (The Nuclear Option):
If it still reeks, take it to a Dry Cleaner with an "Ozone Generator." Ozone gas destroys odors at the molecular level. It costs ~$50 but it works 100% of the time.
